The beautiful city remained relatively untouched by the Vietnam War. Hoi An is known worldwide for its colorful lanterns, narrow streets and low wooden buildings with peculiar tiled roofs, dating from the first half of the 19th century. Many buildings have already been recognized as historically significant. The old town was from the 17th to the early 19th century, one of the most important port cities of Southeast Asia.
